Lebanese Cuisine $81.25 Lebanese cuisine includes an abundance of starches, fruits, vegetables, fresh fish and seafood; animal fats are consumed sparingly. Poultry is eaten more often than red meat, and when red meat is eaten it is usually lamb on the coast and goat meat in the mountain regions. It also includes copious amounts of garlic and olive oil, often seasoned by lemon juice. Rarely a meal goes by in Lebanon that does not include these ingredients. Most often foods are either grilled, baked or sauted in olive oil; butter or cream is rarely used other than in a few desserts. Vegetables are often eaten raw or pickled as well as cooked. While the cuisine of Lebanon doesnt boast an entire repertoire of sauces, it focuses on herbs, spices and the freshness of ingredients; the assortment of dishes and combination are almost limitless. The meals are full of robust, earthy flavors and, like most Mediterranean countries, much of what the Lebanese eat is dictated by the seasons. In Lebanon, very rarely are drinks served without being accompanied by food. One of the more healthy aspects of Lebanese cuisine is the manner or custom in which their food is often served, its referred to as mezze. It is divided into 100 piastres French but inflation has eliminated the subdivisions. The plural form of lira, as used on the currency, is either lirat or the same, whilst there are four forms for qirsh: the dual qirshan, the plural qirush used with numbers 310, the accusative singular qirsha used with 1199, or the genitive singular qirshi used with multiples of 100. Lebanese SOS Childrens Villages $108.33 During spring of 2006 Nadine Saab went to Lebanon to conduct Minor Field Studies for her Bachelor of Social Science. She decided to focus on the SOS Childrens association because it was a field that was unexplored. She could only find basic information about the association on the website, but wanted to know more about the women that worked within the association as mothers to the children being taken care of. That is why Nadine felt that this field could provide a great deal of input as to how the Lebanese society is built and adapted by the inhabitants. The ambition with this thesis was to shed light on individual experiences of how village mothers viewed their own lives at present and what meaning life had given them by becoming village mothers. Among other conclusions that were drawn after this field trip were that the women are very vulnerable to the social situation in Lebanon; most of the time they need someone to support them since men are the primary providers. If the women could not find someone to marry they would need to find another source for provision, and the SOS Childrens Association is one way to go. 2007 Lebanon Conflict $71.7 The 2007 Lebanon conflict began when fighting broke out between Fatah alIslam, an Islamist militant organization, and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) on May 20, 2007 in Nahr alBared, an UNRWA Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli. It was the most severe internal fighting since Lebanons 197590 civil war. The conflict evolved mostly around the Siege of Nahr elBared, but minor clashes also occurred in the Ain alHilweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon and several terrorist bombings took place in and around Lebanons capital Beirut. Lebanon a Country Study $30.9 Western indulgence with Lebanon ended in February 1984. The bombing of the United States Marines barracks in Beirut on October 23, 1983, with the loss of 241 American lives, and the death of some 59 French peacekeeping troops in a similar blast that day, proved how unstable the reconstruction environment was (see Internal Security and Terrorism, ch. 5). Fighting in the Shuf Mountains during the autumn of 1983 illustrated the difficulty of asserting government control even when occupying forces pulled back. Most of the MNF troops pulled out with the partition of Beirut and the renewed fragmentation of the Lebanese Army, although the French and Italians delayed their departure for humanitarian reasons. South Lebanon by Mukalled, Mohamad [Paperback] $135.42 2001, in Southern Lebanese village of Rashaya, at one of two last potteries there, the old man stumped the mould of clay with his bare feet ahead of the manual formation process on the rotator. His wife spoke about a forgotten history and a bloom of the South. Weaving a table cloth, the woman spoke of a time when her family worked hard to satisfy a demanding market for pottery. Rashaya had more than a dozen factories that kept everyone busy. The woman sipped her cardamomblended coffee and reminisced about the times when their pottery was sold to Palestine, out of Bassa (a once thriving Palestinian village, now Shlomi in northern Israel). Their products were also sold to Damascus, and the Druze Mountain, and to the land of Matawleh (Shia) including Tyre and Nabatiyeh. By 1948 Israeli Arab war and the occupation of Palestine, South Lebanon, once a central thriving region among its neighbors, became isolated at the neglected periphery of Lebanon. Neglect was then complicated with conflict where Southerners kept trying to find their place among contesting Lebanese groups. The competition continues to this date.
