Lebanese Cuisine $81.25 Lebanese cuisine includes an abundance of starches, fruits, vegetables, fresh fish and seafood; animal fats are consumed sparingly. Poultry is eaten more often than red meat, and when red meat is eaten it is usually lamb on the coast and goat meat in the mountain regions. It also includes copious amounts of garlic and olive oil, often seasoned by lemon juice. Rarely a meal goes by in Lebanon that does not include these ingredients. Most often foods are either grilled, baked or sauted in olive oil; butter or cream is rarely used other than in a few desserts. Vegetables are often eaten raw or pickled as well as cooked. While the cuisine of Lebanon doesnt boast an entire repertoire of sauces, it focuses on herbs, spices and the freshness of ingredients; the assortment of dishes and combination are almost limitless. The meals are full of robust, earthy flavors and, like most Mediterranean countries, much of what the Lebanese eat is dictated by the seasons. In Lebanon, very rarely are drinks served without being accompanied by food. One of the more healthy aspects of Lebanese cuisine is the manner or custom in which their food is often served, its referred to as mezze. Daughter of Heaven: A Memoir with Earthly Recipes $25.96 A powerful, touching memoir of a ChineseAmerican woman and her Chinese grandmother by an extraordinarily talented author who has drawn comparisons to Amy Tan and Maxine Hong Kingston.Leslie Li belongs to the illustrious Li family of Guilin, China. Her grandfather, Li Zongren, was Chinas first democratically elected vice president, to whom Chiang Kaishek handed over control of the country when he fled to Formosa in 1949. Leslies father was studying in the U.S. where he met and married Leslies Americanborn mother. In 1958, Leslies grandmother Nainai came to live with her sons family in New York, bringing with her a new world of sights, smells, and tastes. Nainais wonderfully exotic new cooking opened Leslies heart and mind to her Chinese heritage and to the world. As Leslie grew, taste became the stronghold of memory, and food the keeper of culture. It was through her grandmothers traditional Chinese cuisine that Leslie bridged the cultural divide in an America where she is a minorityand bridged the growing gap at home between her traditionalist father and her progressive mother. Sprinkled throughout Leslies poignant and moving memoir are recipes from Nainais kitchen that add a delicious dimension to a heartwarming tale. Author: Li, Leslie Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 304 Publication Date: 2011/04/18 Language: English Dimensions: 7.99 x 5.00 x 0.63 inches |
